Self storage

Can you store a boat in a storage unit?

Yes — many self storage facilities rent drive-up units or parking spaces for boats. What matters is the full length with motor and trailer, the door height and the facility's rules on fuel and batteries.

Which size do you need?

Add up the boat's length overall, the outboard overhang and the trailer tongue, then leave some room to walk around. Drive-up units for vehicles are commonly 10 × 20, 10 × 25 and 10 × 30 ft; parking spaces go longer. The space size calculator gives you the size.

Door height and width

Measure the height on the trailer with the windshield, T-top or tower and compare it with the door opening, not the ceiling. Roll-up doors are usually a little narrower than the unit.

Rules to check

  • Whether fuel may stay in the tank (many facilities limit it).
  • Batteries: removed or disconnected.
  • No work, no running engines inside units.
  • Proof of registration and insurance.

Unit, covered space or open lot?

A unit protects best but limits height; a covered or open space is cheaper and takes taller boats. The comparison guide explains the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions

Will a 20 ft boat fit in a 10 × 20 unit?

Rarely once you add the motor and trailer tongue: most 20 ft boats on a trailer need a 25 ft space or more. Measure tip to tip.

Can I store a jet ski in a storage unit?

Usually yes, often in a 10 × 15 or 10 × 20 unit with its trailer; check the length with the trailer.
